DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 2017 EWGA Cup Finals was contested Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th on the Rees Jones and Aruthur Hills courses at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Florida. 400 EWGA Members competed on 50 teams of eight in this team-based national championship. The event was presented by Baird Private Wealth Management and represented the largest gathering of EWGA Members this year.
The "Magnificent 8", composed of EWGA Members from the Orlando and Tampa chapters, emerged from a scorecard playoff based on quality of wins to take the 2017 title. The Westchester Eagles, of the Westchester EWGA chapter, went undefeated by drawing two of their matches to claim second place honors. In third place were the Windy City Warriors of the Chicago Metro EWGA chapter.
"This year's Cup Finals was very competitive," said Meaghan Francella, Director of Golf for the EWGA. "In fact, with a tie for first place our eventual champion was decided based on the quality of wins each team had - meaning how well each team performed in their respective match play matches."
LPGA International, just down the road from LPGA headquarters, provided a memorable venue for this year's event. For three EWGA members in particular, the course played host to another once-in-a-lifetime memory: a hole-in-one.
Connie Palagi, of the Rhode Island "Par Tee" team, summed it up best when discussing her "badass nine-iron" that she used to ace the 97-yard third hole on the Jones Course during her Saturday's singles match: "I'm not even that kind of golfer! I love the game and we play all over, but this is my first Cup experience. I was actually thinking about changing clubs on the tee box, but somehow convinced myself to just play my game."
Julie Smack of the team "Delaware Destroyers" and Jill Rosen of the Palm Beach County chapter's team "Play 2 Stay" also carded their first aces during the weekend.
"The 2017 EWGA Cup was a huge success both on and off the course thanks to all of our sponsors, in particular, our presenting sponsor Baird Private Wealth Management," commented Jane Geddes, CEO of the EWGA. "The Cup served as great finale to our 2017 championship season and provides our Association with momentum as we look towards 2018 and beyond."
