SHALLOTTE, N.C.– The EWGA Cape Fear-Wilmington Chapter hosted the Carolina District Semi-Final at Rivers Edge Golf Club on Saturday July 15, 2017. There are 15 District Semi- Final venues nationwide during a three-month period for golfers who advance from their local Chapter Championships.
Now in its 22nd year, the EWGA Championship is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament of its kind, with more than 2,400 members participating annually. The competitive tournament appeals to EWGA members of all skill levels as it includes five flights of Stroke Play Competition and as well as a Scramble Division. Participants compete in a local Chapter Championship, presented by Guardian Life Insurance of America, then advance to the district semi-finals at one of 15 venues nationwide. The event concludes with the national EWGA Championship, an exciting two-day finals competition that will be held at Hot Springs Village in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 6 and 7.
The Carolina District semi-final had a field of 104 EWGA members representing nine Chapters. The low gross honors went to Lynn Humphrey from the Columbia SC Chapter with a score of 85. Julie Shore from the Sandhills, NC Chapter won the Low Net honors with a score of 78.
Earning advancement opportunities to the Finals were the low gross and low net winners in each flight: First Flight – Laura Boes (82 gross) from Greenville, SC; and Gail Hafley (63 net) from Sandhills, NC; Second Flight Kimberly Mills (90 gross) from Raleigh Triangle, NC; and Rivia Brown (67 net) from Piedmont Triad, NC; Third Flight – Pamela Ripsom (94 gross) from Piedmont Triad, NC; and Juni Fraser(71 net) from Cape Fear-Wilmington, TX; and Fourth Flight – Leigh Ann Smith (105 low gross) from Charlotte, NC and Shannon Boston(75 low net) of Cape Fear-Wilmington, NC.
Earning senior recognition awards were Gail Hafley (Senior-Low Gross) from Sandhills, NC Chapter with a score of 83; Kimberly Mills (Senior-Low Net) from the Raleigh Triangle, NC Chapter; and Carole Stone (Super Senior-Low Gross) from Columbia, SC Chapter with a score of 90; Diane Cox (Super Senior-Low Net) from the Raleigh Triangle, NC Chapter.
The Columbia, SC Chapter scramble team of Dianna Dailey, Beverley Broome, Charlotte Briggs and Teresa Broome came in First with a low net score of 65. Raleigh Triangle scramble team of Carmen Faircloth, Barbara Pearson, Joyce Whitehead and Jennifer Bruce came in second with a net score of 66.
The Cape Fear- Wilmington Chapter hosted a fabulous event. They had 22 volunteers from throughout the Chapter and the Rivers Edge community that helped ensure the success of the tournament! The staff at Rivers Edge went above and beyond to make this a great tournament. The course was in spectacular shape, the food superb and the entire staff was a pleasure to work with!
