MANSFIELD, Tex. – The EWGA Fort Worth Metroplex Chapter hosted the Texas District Semi-Final at Tierra Verde Golf Club Valley on Saturday July 15, 2017. Special guest Jane Geddes, EWGA CEO, flew in to help kick off the EWGA Texas District Semi-Final to the delight of the local membership. There are 15 District Semi- Final venues nationwide during a three month period for golfers who advance from their local Chapter Championships.
Now in its 22nd year, the EWGA Championship is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament of its kind, with more than 2,400 members participating annually. The competitive tournament appeals to EWGA members of all skill levels as it includes five flights of Stroke Play Competition and as well as a Scramble Division. Participants compete in a local Chapter Championship, presented by Guardian Life Insurance of America, then advance to the district semi-finals at one of 15 venues nationwide. The event concludes with the national EWGA Championship, an exciting two-day finals competition that will be held at Hot Springs Village in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 6 and 7.
The Fort Worth Metroplex District semi-final boasted a field of 95 EWGA members representing 6 Chapters (Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; Fort Worth Metroplex, TX; Greater Baton Rouge, LA; Houston, TX; and San Antonio, TX) with 18 ladies earning advancement opportunities to the EWGA Championship Finals. The event Low Gross honors went to Sally Bowman from the Austin, TX chapter with a score of 80. Diana Quintana from the Houston Chapter won the Low Net honors with a score of 75 in the Championship flight. Earning advancement opportunities to the Finals were the low gross and low net winners in each flight: First Flight – Mary Schwind (79 gross) from Dallas, TX; and Cindy Tuttle (64 net) from Austin, TX; Second Flight Celeste Harris (87 gross) from Baton Rouge, LA; and Julia Arthur (67 net) from San Antonio, TX; Third Flight – Shon Bower (95 gross) from Houston, TX; and JT Thomas (65 net) from Austin, TX; and Fourth Flight – Cheryl McCally (102 low gross) from Ft. Worth Metroplex, TX and Leticia Cantu (69 low net) of San Antonio, TX.
Earning senior recognition awards were Linda Heurkins (Senior-Low Gross) with a score of 80; JT Thomas (Senior-Low Net) both from the Austin, TX Chapter; and Cheryl McCally (Super Senior-Low Gross) from Fort Worth Metroplex, TX chapter with a score of 102.
The Dallas, TX Chapter scramble team of Patte Lee, Audrey Lam, Joyce Condit and Sonja Jackson had the low net score of 66, and were crowed the 2017 Scramble Team Champions. There was a three way tie for second place between the Austin, TX Chapter scramble team of Sandra Wood, Ashlee Martin, Cheri Hisaw and Wendy Malloch; the Greater Baton Rouge, LA team of Donna Ashmore, Glinda David, Amy Richardson and Karen Toney; and the San Antonio Chapter scramble team of Ghyslaine Lockhart, Julie Behnke, Debra Humphries, and Lori Fran DuBose all with a net score of 67. The resulting tie requiring a score card play-off to determine the second place winners. By .5 the Austin chapter squeezed out 2nd place advancing to also compete in Hot Springs, AR in the Championship finals.
Special thanks goes out to the EWGA Fort Worth Metroplex Chapter who with their 25 volunteers graciously assisted and entertained in true Fort Worth flavor. The event was the epitome of Texas hospitality with phenomenal facility staff, a manicured Audubon registered golf course, Tierra Verde Golf Club, a hundred enthusiastic lady golfers and perfect golf conditions. Evident this week that there is no place like Texas, for a good time!
