SHERRARD, Ill. – The EWGA Quad Cities Chapter hosted the Upper Midwest District Semi-Final at Fyre Lake Golf Club on Saturday, August 26, 2017. There are 15 District Semi- Final venues nationwide during a three-month period for golfers who advance from their local Chapter Championships in hopes of securing a place in the National EWGA Championship.
Now in its 22nd year, the EWGA Championship is the largest women’s amateur golf tournament of its kind, with more than 2,400 members participating annually. The competitive tournament appeals to EWGA members of all skill levels as it includes five flights of Stroke Play Competition and as well as a Scramble Division. Participants compete in a local Chapter Championship, presented by Guardian Life Insurance of America, then advance to the district semi-finals at one of 15 venues nationwide. The event concludes with the national EWGA Championship, an exciting two-day finals competition that will be held at Hot Springs Village in Hot Springs, Arkansas on October 6 and 7.
The Upper Midwest District semi-final boasted a field of 79 EWGA members representing 6 Chapters (Chicago, IL; Fox Cities/Green Bay, WI; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Minnesota, MN; Quad Cities, IL/IA) with 18 ladies earning advancement opportunities to the EWGA Championship Finals. The event Low Gross honors went to Sarah Dekraay from the Madison, Wisconsin chapter with a score of 78. Kathy Davies from the Chicago Metro Chapter won the Low Net honors with a score of 77 in the Championship flight. Earning advancement opportunities to the Finals were the low gross and low net winners in each flight: First Flight – Liping Zhang (86 gross) from the Quad-Cities Chapter; and Karen Lumb (76 net) from Milwaukee, WI; Second Flight-There was a three-way playoff between Susan Lichty-Schmid (Quad Cities) Cris Marik and Ruth Zumdhal for First place in Second Flight. Winning in second flight were Ruth Zumdhal (97 gross) from Quad Cities IA/IL; and Cris Marik (75 net) from Chicago Metro; Third Flight – Carrie Rosvold (106 gross) from Minnesota Metro; and Diane Knutson (77 net) from Minnesota Metro; and Fourth Flight – Kathleen Burns (103 low gross) from Chicago Metro, and Tammy Dearborn (70 low net) of Quad Cities, IA.
Earning senior recognition awards were Nancy Mohr (Senior-Low Gross) from Milwaukee, WI with a score of 103; Jolene Allen (Senior-Low Net) from Quad Cities, IA.
The Madison WI. Chapter scramble team of Terri Redman, Carrie Sperling, Mary Byrd and Sandra Latham, had the low net score of 68, and were crowned the 2017 Scramble Team Champions at the Upper Midwest, taking second place was the Second place team also from Madison, WI. The players included were Shelly Armstrong, Lauri Droster, Susan Crowson and Dana Hoffmann with a net score of 70.
Special thanks goes out to the EWGA Quad Cities Chapter, who provided 24 volunteers who graciously assisted and entertained in true “Illinois and Iowa” cooperative effort. The event was the epitome of Iowa and Illinois hospitality with an excellent staff at the beautiful Fyre Lake Golf Course, totally enthusiastic lady golfers and wonderful weather for golf. Evident this week was that there is no place like the Quad Cities for a good time!
